Selling Heritage Craft Online: Lessons for Northamptonshire Makers
Northamptonshire has centuries of making behind it. The brands that sell best online are the ones that put that craft on the page, not just the product.
Northamptonshire has long been known for making things well, from footwear and leather goods to engineering and food. Many of those makers now sell online, and the ones that do best are rarely the cheapest. They are the ones whose websites carry the same care as the product, and that is a skill that can be learned.
Lead with provenance
A shopper paying a premium wants to know why. Show where and how the product is made, who makes it and how long the skills have been passed down. Photographs of the workshop, the tools and the people do far more than adjectives. Provenance is the one thing a cheaper competitor cannot copy.
Product pages that sell quality
Use large, sharp photography from several angles and in context, with detail shots of stitching, finish and materials. Describe materials honestly, give precise measurements and sizing guidance, explain care and repair, and answer the questions customers ask before they have to. Reviews with photographs from real customers carry weight.
Make sizing and returns easy
Fit is the biggest source of returns in footwear and clothing. Clear size guides, fit notes from the maker and a fair returns policy shown early reduce both returns and hesitation. Be honest about what can and cannot be returned for made to order items.
Sell beyond the UK
Heritage British brands appeal overseas. Show delivery times and costs to key countries, handle duties and taxes clearly, offer familiar payment methods and consider local currency display. Customs and tax rules change, so check the current requirements for each market.
Be found for the right searches
Shoppers search for specific things: a type of shoe, a material, a heritage claim. Structure your category and product pages around those searches, add product structured data so listings can show price and availability, and write original descriptions instead of copying supplier text.
Tell the story once, well
A strong About page and a few well written pieces on how the product is made give search engines and buyers something to remember. They also give journalists and partners something to link to.
Run it on a platform that fits
Most makers do well on Shopify, with a well designed theme and a few carefully chosen apps. Complex made to order processes may need more. K4O5 builds stores for makers across Northamptonshire and the Midlands, and we are happy to look at yours.
