How to Get More Google Reviews Without Breaking the Rules

Reviews are the strongest local trust signal there is, and most happy customers never leave one unless asked. Here is how to ask properly.

When someone searches for a local business, reviews do much of the persuading. They influence who appears in local results, who gets clicked and who gets the call. Most satisfied customers are happy to leave a review, but they rarely think to do it, so the businesses with the most reviews are usually just the ones that ask consistently and make it easy.

Ask at the right moment

The best time is soon after a good result, when the customer is pleased and the details are fresh: when a job is finished, a product is delivered or a problem is solved. A request sent a month later gets forgotten. Build the request into your normal process so it happens every time, not only when you remember.

Make it a one tap job

Create the direct review link for your Google Business Profile and use it everywhere. Send it by text or email, add it to invoices and receipts, show a QR code at the counter or on a card handed over at the end of a job. The fewer steps between a happy customer and a finished review, the more reviews you will receive.

Ask in your own words, and be specific

A personal message works better than a generic template. Thank them, say how much a review helps a small business and ask if they would mind sharing their experience. Do not script what they should say, but you can gently suggest they mention what they hired you for and where they are, because that detail helps other customers and helps search.

Reply to every review

Thank people for good reviews, briefly and personally. Reply to poor reviews calmly, factually and without defensiveness, offering to put things right offline. Prospects read your replies, and a professional response to criticism often impresses them more than a spotless record would.

What Google does not allow

Do not buy reviews, pay for them or write them yourself. Do not offer discounts or gifts in exchange for reviews, and do not ask only happy customers while screening out unhappy ones using a filter, a practice known as review gating. Do not ask staff or family to post reviews. Google removes these and can penalise the profile, and consumer protection law also takes fake reviews seriously.

Handle bad reviews properly

If a review is genuinely fake, breaks the policy or relates to a different business, you can report it for removal. If it is simply unfavourable, reply and try to resolve the issue. Do not argue in public.

Use them everywhere

Show your best reviews on your website, on service pages and in proposals, with permission where they name a person. Genuine reviews also help the way AI assistants describe and recommend your business.

K4O5 sets up review requests, profile optimisation and local search for businesses across Northamptonshire and the Midlands, and we are happy to help you build a simple, honest system.
