Restaurant Website Design: Menus, Allergens and Bookings That Actually Work

Most diners check a restaurant's site on a phone, standing in the street. A few practical choices decide whether they walk in or move on.

Restaurant website design has one overriding test: can a hungry person on a phone find the menu, the opening hours and a way to book within ten seconds? Many sites in hospitality fail this test, burying the essentials beneath a cinematic video and a slow-loading animation. Whether you run a bistro in Milton Keynes, a pub with rooms or a takeaway, these are the choices that make the difference between a booking and a bounce.

Put the menu in the page, not in a PDF

A menu saved as a PDF is awkward on a phone, impossible for search engines to read properly and a headache to update. Publish the menu as ordinary text on a web page, grouped under clear headings, with prices and short descriptions. Update it the day it changes, and show the date it was last revised. Add a downloadable copy only as an extra, if at all.

Take allergens seriously

In the UK, food businesses must be able to provide information about the fourteen major allergens in the food they serve, and the rules for pre-packed items made on the premises were tightened after a tragic case. A website can help by listing allergens against each dish, or by saying clearly how customers can ask and who will answer. Whichever approach you use, keep it accurate and consistent with what the kitchen does, and train front-of-house staff to follow it. Check the current guidance from the Food Standards Agency rather than relying on a summary.

Opening hours that are true

Few things irritate customers more than driving to a closed restaurant. Show the hours in text on the home page and on the contact page, and add special hours for bank holidays and private events well in advance. Keep your Google Business Profile in step, since many people see it first. If you close for a holiday, put a notice at the top of the site and on social media.

Make booking painless

Offer a visible booking button on every page, and make the process short: date, time, party size, name and contact number. Confirm instantly by message, explain your cancellation and deposit policy in plain words and send a reminder. If you use a third-party booking tool, check it is fast on a phone and that it respects customers' data. Provide a phone number for larger parties and special requests.

Photography that tells the truth

Good photographs of the actual food, the room and the team are worth more than any amount of copy. Show dishes as they arrive at the table, and show the room as a guest sees it. Compress images so pages load quickly, and give each a description for those using screen readers.

Accessibility and practical information

State whether the premises are step-free, where accessible parking is available and whether you can cater for particular dietary needs. Include directions from the nearest station or car park and say whether dogs and children are welcome. Provide readable text and strong colour contrast, which also helps in bright daylight on a phone.

Help people find you

Use structured data for the restaurant, its menu and its opening hours so that search engines can present them accurately. Gather reviews and respond to them thoughtfully. Share events and seasonal menus as separate pages, which gives people reasons to return.

Keep it simple to maintain

Think about private hire and groups

Many restaurants earn a meaningful share of their income from celebrations, work gatherings and larger tables. Give these their own page with capacity, sample menus, minimum spend, deposit terms and a form that asks the right questions: date, numbers, dietary needs and the occasion. Respond quickly, since people planning a party usually contact several venues in the same hour. Photographs of the private room set up for a real event help more than a floor plan.

Keep social media and the site in step

Diners often check Instagram for a feel of the place and the website for the practical details. Make sure they agree. Link to your latest posts, but do not rely on them to carry the opening hours or the menu, because platforms change and not everyone has an account. When you run a special, publish it on the site first, so that search engines and people without an account can find it.

Choose tools your own team can edit between services. If you would like a restaurant site that is quick, clear and easy to keep current, we would be happy to talk about it.
