Ecommerce Conversion: Ten Fixes to Make Before You Buy More Traffic
More visitors will not help a shop that loses most of them at the basket. These ten fixes usually pay for themselves faster than advertising.
When an online shop is not selling enough, the instinctive answer is more traffic. Yet if most visitors leave without buying, sending more of them to the same shop simply wastes more money. Improving the proportion who buy, usually called the conversion rate, is often the cheaper and faster route to growth. These ten fixes are the ones we see make a difference most often.
1. Make it fast
Every extra second of loading costs sales, especially on mobile connections. Compress images, remove unused apps and plugins, and test on a real phone. A fast shop also ranks better.
2. Fix the mobile checkout
Most visitors browse on a phone, and many give up when forms are fiddly. Use large buttons, the right keyboard for each field, and wallet payments such as Apple Pay and Google Pay so customers can pay in two taps.
3. Offer guest checkout
Forcing people to create an account before they can pay is one of the most common reasons for abandoned baskets. Let them buy first and offer an account afterwards.
4. Be upfront about delivery and returns
Surprise delivery charges at the last step are a major cause of abandonment. Show costs and delivery times early, on the product page and in the basket, and make your returns policy easy to find and fair.
5. Improve product pages
Good photographs from several angles, clear descriptions, sizes, materials, stock status and honest answers to the questions customers ask all reduce doubt. Short product videos help where products are hard to judge from pictures.
6. Show genuine reviews
Visible reviews build confidence, particularly for newer shops. Collect them automatically after purchase and display them on product pages.
7. Make search and filters work
Customers who use search convert strongly, so it must return sensible results. Filters for size, price and category should be quick and clear.
8. Show trust signals
Secure payment badges, clear contact details, a real address and recognisable payment methods reassure first time buyers. Do not fake them, but do display the ones you genuinely have.
9. Recover abandoned baskets
A polite reminder email, sent within hours, wins back a meaningful share of lost sales. Keep it helpful rather than pushy, and respect marketing consent rules.
10. Measure where people leave
Look at your analytics to see where visitors drop out, from product page to basket to payment. Fix the biggest leak first, then test again. Small, steady improvements compound.
